Before the Eye

Don’t ask me to be careless

I cannot care less

cannot forget the muscle memory of migration

at the base of my neck

because I fear a future of

forever facing forward,

forehead forgetting that the passing

of time is told by the breaths

of mitochondria and the

birth of cells.

My tears will find the sea

if I remember that these

floorboards too once had

leaves.
